On our trip to South Dakota, we had a wonderful time. Not only at the Wild Deadwood Reads book event, where I sold quite a few books, but traveling around the Black Hills region and seeing the sights. Here are a few pictures taken at the book event, including the winner of the Little Free Library created by my father-in-law Danny and brother-in-law Tim. The young man the winner of a slot machine-designed library full of books donated by authors attending the event. All part of a raffle of baskets and gifts provided by authors that raised over $2K for the Shiloh Rescue Ranch in Deadwood.

The new flooring was completed in our house and it turned out great. Here are a couple pictures of the completed work, including my Packers man cave. A comfortable space I enjoy year round.

I get a little break in July with only one event and then it gets busy for the rest of the year. This will include two weeks in Nashville living in our motorhome for Killer Nashville and Bouchercon, and then again for several more days in Loveland Colorado for the Goodguys Car Show. After that nearly every weekend I’ll have an event of some kind. The July event will be in Lafayette Colorado for Art Night Out which I understand is well attended. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for good weather and minimal wind since we’ll be outdoors.

Work by Phillip Polite is continuing on the audiobook for Fallen Star: The Divine Devils Book Two. I’ve been listening to the chapters to approve them and he has done a great job. I hope to get the audiobook finalized in the next couple of weeks and available to purchase and download shortly after. You can listen to a couple of previews of the audiobook here.

As I mentioned, this month’s author feature focuses on best-selling and award-winning author Mike Faricy. Last month I mentioned we purchased a 2024 Can-Am Spyder Sea to Sky to get back to riding a motorcycle. Last week we added a trailer (picture above) to pull behind the Spyder to carry extra gear for longer trips. Below is my daughter Dakota getting a riding lesson from me in the local community college parking lot. She now has the bug to one day get a Spyder of her own.

We are currently re-doing a large section of the upstairs in our house. This includes the loft, which is my Packers Man Cave (Yes I’m a Green Bay Packers Fan). New paint, and new hardwood flooring. New flooring for the entire loft, hallway, and all the stairs in the house. The painting is already done and the flooring is being installed this week. Here are a couple of before and after pictures with the last one being the partial completion, without the flooring. We have high hopes for the finished product when it’s done. I will have a final picture in my newsletter next month.

There isn’t much that boils my blood more than when I find a website giving away my books for free, without my permission. If you do a Google search for pirated eBooks, you will find a long listing of sites. All of which you should stay away from, for they are crawling with malware. One such website I discovered, had several of my books. When I contacted them through the email address provided to contest them giving away my books, the email bounced back as undeliverable. I then searched The WhoIs database to learn who the web provider was that hosted the site. I contacted them with a forceful email to take my books down or I would take legal action. It took a couple of weeks, but now my books are no longer on their website. This is clearly theft of my copyrighted material. People may not understand how much time and money is involved in writing a book, especially by indie authors. Most of my books take 6-9 months to create. Not to mention the costs of paying an editor and an artist to design the cover. All these costs come straight out of my pocket. Then when it comes time to sell the book, Amazon takes their cut, which runs between 35 to 70 percent. Honestly, I don’t believe I’ve made a profit on any of the books I’ve sold. And then when I find someone has stolen my material and is giving it away for free, it makes me angry. If you see sites like this claiming to be giving away free eBooks, stay away from them. If not for me and other authors, but to keep malware off of your computer. If you know about other sites out there that might be giving my books away, let me know and I’ll investigate. The only place to legally purchase my eBooks is from Amazon.

It will be 5 years this August since we moved into our new home. Our previous home, which we lived in for 22 years, had very little grass to mow. Transitioning to a Xeriscape yard with mostly mulch, plants, bushes, and trees. Our new home is on a large corner lot with all grass, which I hated to mow. Not to mention the huge water bills needed to keep it green during our dry Colorado summers. This spring I completed the transformation of that front lot to a more waterwise landscape. Now with only a small section of grass to mow (YIPPEE!!). It was hard work, but worth it. I’ve received many compliments from our neighbors on how it looks. Below you’ll see what we started with and what it looks like now. And it will be even more beautiful when it all starts to bloom.

Here are a few more shots of flowers flourishing in our wildly changing spring weather, with more heat, followed by another wet snowstorm. And this past weekend about 2 inches of rain. The weather is never boring here.

I was hooked from the start and was kept guessing until the very end. With all the twists and turns, I never knew what would happen next, and I turned the pages as fast as I could. The characters were authentic and relatable. Jarvis went out of his way to help Corrine with her husband, plus doing everything possible to track down the serial killer. As if that was not enough, Jarvis also had to testify against the Front Range Butcher. Different subplots were masterfully woven into the main story, and the chapters flowed into each other. This was such a suspenseful read and gave me much more than I expected.

Jarvis Mann, private investigator is anxiously awaiting the trial of the Front Range Butcher. Jarvis can’t wait to see the Butcher found guilty and sentenced to death. As you can see from the pictures above, springtime weather in Colorado can swing in wild directions. The pictures were from 18 inches of wet, heavy snow we got a couple weeks ago. Then after it melted, flowers started to bloom from the warm weather, which neared 70 degrees. And then we had another snowstorm of 5 more inches. I’ve lived here for over 40 years, and this type of weather is normal in the Mile High City. And apparently, these flowers are accustomed to the wild swings, blooming even in the cold and snow.

Good day to everyone. My big news is Murder by a Hundred Cuts is in my editor’s hands. Tina already telling me, “Wow she loved it!” She says she’ll have the edits to me by the end of next week and when I get it, I’ll need to go through all the changes and tighten up the story. Once that is done, it’s back to Tina for one final read-through. When I get to that point, I will set a release date. Right now I’m thinking it will fall sometime in May. My graphic artist is working on three concepts for the cover for me to decide on. I will have a sneak peek of the cover in the next couple of months.

While I’m waiting for the edit on the new book, I started the first story in my new series I’ve been teasing about over the last couple of months. I currently have 9 chapters written, which I’ve had Alpha Readers scrutinizing over with positive feedback provided. I plan on submitting the beginning of this new book for the prestigious Claymore Award which is given for the best first 50 pages of an unpublished manuscript in several categories. I submitted the first 50 pages of The Divine Devils a few years back. It wasn’t nominated for the Claymore, but did win a year later The Silver Falchion Award for Best Thriller. Maybe I can recreate the magic!

There has been a lot of talk about AI (Artificial Intelligence) in the book industry. Especially when it comes to writing books. Authors who are using software to create their stories instead of their own imagination. When setting up a new book on Amazon to sell, there is a box you must check if you use AI in any manner to create your book. I can guarantee you, I will never use AI for any aspect of creating any of my works. If I can’t do it myself, I will stop writing. To me, that is cheating. All authors have their own voice and style when they write. AI would only be the voice of the software and the programmer who created it. When doing my work, I only use real humans to provide feedback, whether it be Alpha/Beta Readers or my editor. The only aspect I might use AI for would be the marketing of my books. A writer who doesn’t create the works themselves can’t be branded as an author in my eyes.

The Divine Devils kept me completely off my game as far as being able to predict what was around the corner and this was refreshing. One thing I will say, if you are one of those listeners/readers that looks to find fault in the tactical accuracy you will, but I’m not sure what a book like this is written for. Also the character development is much more engaging because even those characters that are just spotlighted have enough build up to want to see them more. I hope everyone has been checking out the fellow authors I’ve been featuring each month. A lot of new books to explore. This month Bruce W. Most is the featured author. Bruce lives in Denver, Colorado, and was raised in Iowa, just like I was. While Bruce doesn’t write a series, his mysteries share one thing in common: each is what he likes to call classic whodunits, where the reader gets a fair crack at figuring out the killer before his sleuth does. His first published mystery, Bonded for Murder, featuring a woman bail bond agent, was nominated for a Colorado Book Award. Rope Burn (cattle rustling and murder in modern-day Wyoming) and Murder on the Tracks (1949 Denver) won Colorado Authors’ League awards for best genre novels. CAL awarded him a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022. His crime short stories have been published in Mystery Magazine. His latest whodunit is No Time for Murder.

I’m taking time out today to write this newsletter. I’ve been working hard on my newest book, and I should have the first draft done later this week. Once I get some final feedback from my beta readers, I will read through it again and do rewrites which should take about two weeks. From there the story is off to my editor for her changes and suggestions. And I’ve started the process of getting the cover created. I hope to get the book finalized and have it released in a few months. The working title: Murder by a Hundred Cuts which will be book 10 in the Jarvis Mann PI Series and direct follow-up to my award-winning book The Front Range Butcher. Being a pantser, which is a author who essentially writes by the seat of their pants, my stories evolve while I write them. With this style of writing, I often write my characters into a corner. This can be challenging but also thrilling at the same time. We all face obstacles every day, that we don’t anticipate and we have to work through. This is the same for my characters. Unexpected events happen, though for them they can be life and death. When I write them into a corner, I often step back and decide how they would react. Sometimes it’s using their brains, others their brawn, and even a gun. And there are times when those three options fail, and those characters don’t make it out alive. Those are the events in a story that make them realistic in my mind. It can be shocking for the reader, as well as for the writer.

What an ending to this Divine Devils saga! This was by far the best book in the series. I was left bewildered when Hunter got himself into what seemed like an impossible situation. How did he let this happen? And how is he going to get out of this one? The rest of the Devils are banned from helping so how is Hunter going to deal with his “mother” and the Organisation and come out of it alive? We have been left with cliffhangers from each book, questions left unanswered. This is where everything is sorted out and all threads are neatly sewn together. Twists and turns that I never expected Actions and reactions that left the reader speechless. Absolutely astounding Mr. Weir! I was gripped from the beginning to the end ……. and what an ending. All your background work and months of plotting have paid off. This book is truly a thriller – Avis

The plot is riveting, the pace is action-packed, and the characters are supremely developed. This final installment, and the entire series, is every thriller fan’s dream – Xkoqueen

This is my first book by this author, but after listening to this incredible episode of The Divine Devils it certainly won’t be my last. I like this author’s writing style, how there is a play on words with Hunter Divine’s name, he’s a hunter on the side of divinity, clever don’t you think? He’s on the trail of an evil antagonist., the story is id intriguing, thrilling, and chilling too, I have to say that I loved the devilish touches. It’s so easy to get lost in the story it’s written in such a way that it’s believable, even though it’s quite impossible. The story is smooth-flowing and well-written it pulled me in and gripped me from beginning to end, It’s thrilling and intriguing the characters are well-drawn and interesting and at times intense. The plotline is great and easy to follow whilst ensuring that you’re kept guessing what will happen next. I look forward to listening to more from this series. The narration is performed very well by Phillip Polite, he’s a new narrator for me but one I enjoyed listening to – LeMiliere

I hope everyone had some time off to spend with family and loved ones. The final book in The Divine Devils series, Divine Retribution continues to get great reviews. Here are two others that recently were posted:

Wow! What a stupendous ending to the Divine Devils saga! “Divine Retribution: The Divine Devils Final Chapter” brilliantly brings the previous books together and ties them all in a neat package. All those who have worked with the Divine Devils in some capacity are reunited in this novel, including Valerie who has a cameo. We finally learn who “The Organization” is after only hearing about this corrupt group throughout the saga. The gritty writing expected from Mr. Weir is still evident and it helps the reader perceive the tough characters for who they are. It is easy to visualize the surroundings in each scene as Mr. Weir meticulously draws the details. Tension builds from the first page of the story and continues to build throughout. The reader’s heart races along as the tension escalates. Emotions run rampant as the reader experiences everything from tenderness to goose bump inducing horror at the atrocities carried out all in the name of manipulation. Tears will come during this convoluted tale, so have a tissue at the ready. All questions lingering from previous novels are all answered in this tell all, be all story, to include the secret from Hunter’s infancy which unknown to him, has been haunting him throughout this saga. A mind boggling tale, one will never be the same after being immersed in the dark world of the Divine Devils – Belinda

Hunter’s Divine Devils are disbanded and he’s hiding out trying to find the link to the killer and some woman who claims she is his rightful mother. He avoids his previous problems with alcohol and drugs, channeling all his energy into his mission. Although disbanded, each member of the group starts poking around themselves and connecting as they gather information. As the pieces come together, the tension builds and the pace quickens. Well-written, there are the characters to like, as well as villains, including the one who wants all the Divine Devils dead and Hunter working for her. Hard to put down with many dead or injured, yet an effective ending. Although this is the fourth in the series, it can be read as a stand-alone. That said, it’s always best to start at the beginning of a series, rather than the end. I’d highly recommend this book (and the series) for those who don’t mind graphic scenes and who enjoy suspense, action, and a fast pace. I’m sorry the series is ending – C-Lu

Happy Halloween to everyone. I’ll start off by sharing a picture of our pumpkin patch haul, which wasn’t too bad. We picked and shared them with our neighbors, who happily took most of them after we kept three for ourselves.

Here is a couple of pictures of beautiful fall colors I captured on the drive to one of our events.

At the beginning of the newsletter, you’ll find my new logo. It was designed by my cover artist Mia, who felt it was time for an update to combine the logos for my two book series. I think it really stands out and will be a great eye-catcher. It will be part of the new table banner I’m now using, which combines all of my book titles and this banner below to post for advertisements and social media.

After three previous attempts, with three different narrators that didn’t work out for various reasons, I’m finally thrilled to announce the audiobook for my Silver Falchion Award-Winning Book The Divine Devils is now available. The long road to getting the audiobook finalized, which took nearly two years until I finally found the right person for the job. After a strong audition, I hired Phillip Polite, who I believe did a wonderful job of bringing this book to life. This wasn’t an easy task with the length of the book being over 400 pages and the number of different characters in the story of over 60, which made The Divine Devils a real challenge for anyone to produce. But Phillip worked hard on the project and finished it in good time. I will be doing a Facebook Live with Phillip this weekend, to interview him about the project. Tentatively it’s scheduled for 10AM Mountain time on Sunday (Oct 29th). You can go to my Facebook account for more details and I’ll post the video on my website for everyone to watch. A great boost for the book which has brought more readers to the rest of the series.

The story was intriguing and engaging right to the last paragraph. Well written and

This was my first time reading a book by R. Weir. I found myself hooked in the first few chapters. Once I was hooked I couldn’t put the book down. I lost a lot of sleep reading this book. I just had to know who the bad guys were and why they did what they did. I also loved the villian Valarie and one of the good guys Athena and there threats against each other. I found myself greatly anticipating their big show down. Hunter Divine ex US Marshall was such a great character as well as his special team he put together. This was book 1 in the series and I am dying to get to book 2 now – Kathi

Divine Retribution: The Divine Devils Final Chapter has received several more 5-star reviews. Here are a couple of them:

R Weir writes an incredibly thrilling and suspenseful tale with Divine Retribution. This book is part of the The Divine Devils series, and this is volume four. I am a big fan of R Weir and read whatever this author writes. This author has a grand imagination, and talent for showing the story. With any series, I recommend reading the books from volume one. Hunter is an amazing man, and leader of the Divine Devils. Hunter is in a dark place, losing someone very close to him, almost wanting him to give up. He tries to fight through the dread and darkness and look for answers about his own childhood. He is surprised to find answers that may or may not be true, and could put his team in danger. This book says it’s his final chapter, but I hope not. Even if it is, the stories are just amazing, and very unputdownable! This story was absolutely incredible. This author is a superb storyteller. The reader just embarks on a superb journey. This is a magnificent plot that kept this reader turning the pages. The author’s technique of raw, magnetic characters and great plotlines is a gift. This final chapter is definitely unpredictable. Divine Retribution is a definite recommendation by Amy’s Bookshelf Reviews.

This read was a wild ride from the first chapter. Sad to see the series end but R Weir did the characters justice in this book. Faced with a tragedy Hunter goes dark. He knows the Divine Devils will have his back and when needed they do. When faced with his past he finds some secrets long buried. My emotions were a wreck from all he has endured. Kudos to Mr Weir for making me scared to turn each page. My emotions were put through the wringer for all the danger the Divine Devils faced. I didn’t want any of them to meet death. Did they, you ask. You will have to read to see. A great read that will keep the suspense coming and the nail biting moments a plenty. Mr Weir creates characters that you are invested in long after you read the last page – Shelly

Weir has done it again. I read his books faster than any others, just can’t put them down. I hate the fact that this is the last in this series. I love The Divine Devils; and the final chapter was perfect. Lots of action and intrigue from the best team ever assembled. Just when you think you have something figured out, you find out more and are amazed at this team’s abilities. Hunter has all the qualities you’d want in a leader, and he’s not shy about any of his talents. If you haven’t read this series, it’s a must! R.Weir is one of my favorite authors. I love his ability to kidnap me for a few days and take my mind away for suspense, plot twists and just plain good writing. I’m sad to see the Divine Devils series end, but this last adventure is a grand finale worthy of any book lovers “Want to Read “ list. Hunter and his team encounter previous foes and with their usual skills and team work engage the enemy to complete the mission. Hunter then goes solo to seek answers about his past and to seek peace for himself. A fantastic ending to the series. Reviewed by Charlene

At the Windsor Harvest Festival a couple weeks back, we had a torrential downpour hit us at around 3:45 PM. Fortunately, we got our tent walled in and no books were damaged. But Kim got drenched for the second time this year at an outdoor event while getting the final wall in place. And we were walking through rivers to get to our car it rained so much.

From the garden, our flowers did well this year, but not our corn, which didn’t come up at all. But as usual cucumbers we coming off the vine faster than we could eat them. Here is one batch, the curved one measuring 15 inches. And our pumpkin patch has been great, with many we’ll share with the kids in the neighborhood.
